Our heritage
The beginnings of the Swiss community in Alexandria
Swiss connections with Egypt reach back to the late eighteenth century and grew alongside Alexandria’s transformation into a major Mediterranean city.
In 1858, thirty-two Swiss nationals gathered in Place des Consuls—today Midan El Mansheya—and founded the Cercle Suisse d’Alexandrie, named Helvetia.
Experts, explorers and entrepreneurs
Swiss figures contributed to agriculture, trade and exploration, including John Ninet and John Ludwig Burckhardt.
Helvetia is founded
Thirty-two Swiss residents established the Cercle Suisse d’Alexandrie. Its founders included Paul Reinhart and Jacques and Pierre Planta.
A permanent home in Chatby
After meeting in rented locations, the community built its own Swiss Club and Swiss School in Alexandria’s Chatby district.
