Our heritage
The beginnings of the Swiss community in Alexandria
Swiss connections with Egypt reach back to the late eighteenth century and grew alongside Alexandria’s transformation into a major Mediterranean city.
In 1858, thirty-two Swiss nationals gathered in Place des Consuls—today Midan El Mansheya—and founded the Cercle Suisse d’Alexandrie, named Helvetia.
Experts, explorers and entrepreneurs
Swiss figures contributed to agriculture, trade and exploration, including John Ninet and John Ludwig Burckhardt.
Helvetia is founded
Thirty-two Swiss residents established the Cercle Suisse d’Alexandrie. Its founders included Paul Reinhart and Jacques and Pierre Planta.
A permanent home in Chatby
After meeting in rented locations, the community built its own Swiss Club and Swiss School in Alexandria’s Chatby district.

Renée Tourky
Le 13 septembre 2026, Renée Tourky, née Alexandre, aurait eu 100 ans. Le destin en a décidé autrement : elle s’est éteinte paisiblement en juin, quelques mois seulement avant son centenaire.
Peu après, son petit-neveu René-Pierre Antille s’est rendu en Égypte et a visité le Club le 27 juin, accompagné de Mostafa El Shenawi, neveu de l’époux de Renée et membre du Club. Ensemble, nous avons évoqué les moments partagés avec elle.
René-Pierre nous a également confié la transcription de leur dernier entretien, enregistré en français à Alexandrie, chez Nénette, à l’automne 2025. Dans ce précieux témoignage, Renée raconte son enfance en Valais, son parcours professionnel et sa rencontre avec Ahmed, avec qui elle partagea cinquante années de vie.
Le 12 septembre, le Club Suisse se réunira pour honorer sa mémoire.
